Grandparents (now aunts and uncles too) receiving calls again

[Fort Wayne, IN – July 2, 2009] – A consumer called BBB telling us she had received a call from a “police officer in Canada” to let her know that her nephew had been in an accident and did not have legal insurance and was currently being jailed. He instructed her to send $2,900 (later dropping it to $2,800) Western Union to the address he gave her. She went to Walmart to do the transaction, but a Walmart employee became concerned when the consumer said “Western Union to Canada.” The consumer was very appreciative that the employee at Walmart stopped her from sending the money.

We are alerting consumers to alert their senior parents. The BBB and FBI cannot figure out how they are getting the names of these people and that they are using the names of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc.
